When I first got hold of one of these compressor pedals 15 years ago, I was extremely disappointed.
Even though it occupied my pedal board for a few years, I don’t think I ever used it. All it seemed to do was squash the life out of my sound and add noise to my signal chain.
So when we set about modifying this pedal, eliminating the noise was our first consideration. This meant removing all the low budget capacitors and replacing them with high grade Metlized Polyfilm caps.
We then replaced the diodes with Germainan 1N34a’s, this gives the pedal more of a tube-like sound.
This is where most pedal modifiers would stop, but at Von Lehmann Engineering, we went a little further.........We replaced ALL the op-amps.
This pedal uses three M5223AL SIP op-amps, they’re not bad but they do add quite a lot of noise and sound a bit lifeless. With the help of our Von Lehmann designed ‘Arachnoids’, we were able to replace all three of these noisy chips with ‘Red Demons’.
After no less than 18 modifications, this almost useless CS-3, could now be the best compression pedal on the market.
